Evonik: Introduction of new member of the PEBA family

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Evonik’s polyamide 12 elastomer (PEBA), a popular, trusted material—especially in the athletic equipment industry—owing to its very good performance and design freedom*. To celebrate this anniversary, Evonik announced that it will be introducing a new member of the PEBA product family, whose transparency and gloss give designers far more freedom than they have ever had with PEBA.

“Our PA 12 elastomer is extremely lightweight thanks to its low density. In comparison with other sole materials, this would eliminate about 100 kg of weight for a player to carry around in the sum of his steps during a 90-minute soccer match. That saves energy and increases endurance,” says Klaus Hülsmann, plastics expert in the Consumer Goods market segment of Evonik. (Source: Evonik)

Vestamid polyamides have been used in the automotive industry, in industrial production, and in consumer goods for over 50 years in some cases. Evonik’s roughly EUR 400 million investment—its largest in Germany—will increase the company’s total capacity for polyamide 12 by over 50 % between now and 2021. Worldwide, Vestamid PA12 and Vestamid PA612 are the most widely used polyamides for automotive tubing. New developments will focus on conductive products and on applications for electric and hybrid vehicles. Other products in the portfolio are chemical-resistant, transparent polyamides Trogamid and Vestakeep PEEK for tribological and high-temperature applications. Evonik also develops and manufactures polymer powders for 3D printing.

Evonik’s Vestenamer is an established thermoplastic processing additive, allows efficient processing of waste rubber to a robust material and minimization of the degradation of properties that is associated with the use of recyclates. In this way it makes an important contribution toward closing the recycling cycle. Vestenamer allows waste rubber to be processed into a tough material that can be used in a variety of applications such as road construction, sports or playgrounds. The product has been used as a process additive in the rubber industry for many years. Manufactured at the Marl Chemical Park in Germany, the polyoctenamer can solve a number of different challenges in the compounding and processing of rubber. In the recycling of waste rubber, the addition of Vestenamer has already proven its worth, e.g., in the production of rubber articles such as floor coverings, mats, and stand systems for signposting of road works and barriers. The process additive improves the flowability of the rubber compound, allowing the material to be processed much more efficiently. The reactivity and polymer structure of Vestenamer are also important here, said Evonik. Both lead to a good network density between the rubber particles. This in turn positively impacts the mechanical properties.
