Research institutions and industry partners from Germany and South Africa are cooperating in the new MultiMat³ project as part of the European Union's M-era.Net program. Together, they are developing optimized and new materials for use in additive manufacturing technologies.

APS Elastomers has set up a new state-of-the-art lab after moving to a larger facility in Westland, Michigan, USA, in 2020. With the new laboratory APS can provide in-depth and high- level customer and technical service, problem-solving, product development and support to designers, OEMs and processors. Capabilities including tensile strength, melt flow rate, density, durometer hardness, melting point, gel count, stress at 100% and 300%, elongation at break, tear strength, and taber abrasion loss.

The purpose of the PolySLS project was to develop and test a new styrene based polymer compound for Selective Laser Sintering (SLS). A particular focus of the project was on researching energy and material requirements. Partners in the project were Ineos Styrolution, the Kunststoffzentrum (SKZ-KFE gGmbH) and the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany.

With Dipromat, a new player has entered the additive manufacturing market. The basis of the start-up's business model is the development and marketing of TPE for the AM market, especially in small and medium quantities. The TPEs are marketed under the brand name Diproflex.

The V860 and V861 series of thermoplastic elastomers have been developed by Elastron to provide an alternative to standard TPVs on the market today. The grades are said to exhibit product performance comparable to standard TPVs and superior to SEBS-based TPEs.

Sumika Polymer Compounds Europe announced the creation of a subsidiary in Poznan, Poland, Sumika Polymer Compounds Poland Sp.z o.o. (SPCP). A new production site of about 5500 m² will be dedicated to compounded polypropylene manufacturing. This investment will provide 30,000 t/y of additional capacity for the group and will increase European production capacity to 170,000 t/y. Start of production with two compounding lines is scheduled for Q1/2022. The company expects the demand for PP compounds in the area to grow solidly with the spread of electric vehicles (EV) due to the tightening of environmental regulations.

Trinseo finalised the expansion of its thermoplastic elastomers R&D Center in Mussolente, Italy. The dedicated R&D center is led by Marco Meneghetti - Global TPE T&I Leader and it is supporting both of Trinseo’s manufacturing sites for soft plastics – Mussolente and Hsinchu. The facility, located on the premises of Trinseo’s main TPE manufacturing facility, has been under construction since February 2020. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, which hit Italy especially hard, work continued with complete adherence to the plans laid out to prevent the spread of the virus.

BP and Sabic have signed a new agreement in March 2021to work together to drive circular economy in the petrochemical activities at the Gelsenkirchen (Germany) chemical complex. Building on a long established relationship between the two companies at the production site, the new collaboration will help to increase production of certified circular products that take used mixed plastics to make feedstock, thereby reducing the amount of fossil resources needed in the petrochemical plants at the site.

Prof. Georg Menges, Professor emeritus, holder of the Chair of Plastics Processing and long-time head of the Institute for Plastics Processing (IKV) at RWTH Aachen University, passed away on 28 February 2021 at the age of 97. Prof. Menges was also holder of an honorary doctorate from the Montan University Leoben, an honorary member of the Board of the Association of Sponsors of the Institute for Plastics Processing in Industry and Craft at RWTH Aachen University as well as a holder of numerous national and international awards.
