Optical fibres are vital for the rollout of the 5G network. The new elastomers in the Septon Q series from Kuraray provide lasting protection for these sensitive optical fibres and are far lighter than TPU and TPC. The Septon Q series is a range of thermoplastic elastomers that combines softness and elasticity. Compounds with Septon Q series products as the base polymer have very good mechanical properties and are lighter than conventional materials.

Huntsman Polyurethanes has extended its cooperation with Chemie-Plast, one of its long-standing distribution partners in Europe. As part of a new agreement, Chemie-Plast will sell Irogran TPU pellets to filament makers in Europe that want to create high quality spools of TPU materials for 3D printing and additive manufacturing projects.

Since July this year, Ravago Manufacturing's Steinfurt production site has been certified to international medical devices quality management standard DIN EN ISO 13485. This was announced by the company in late November. The Steinfurt site produces compounds based on amorphous and semi-crystalline thermoplastics for applications in medical and pharmaceutical technology and in in vitro diagnostics. This standard focuses on compliance with regulatory requirements and product safety including risk management. Its requirements may also be extended to manufacturers of the raw materials used in medical devices. Ultrapolymers, a member of the Ravago Group as well, distributes these medical compounds throughout Europe. The compounds produced in Steinfurt complement the range of Ultrapolymers' thermoplastics for this sector which also include polyolefins, styrenics, polymethyl methacrylates, polycarbonates and TPS produced by leading polymer manufacturers.

Tiziano Caprara has taken the position of Managing Director at KraussMaffei Italia. Caprara succeeds Andrea Bottelli, who headed the Italian subsidiary initially for the Netstal brand (now KraussMaffei High Performance) and since 2013 also for the KraussMaffei brand, successfully developing the Injection Molding machinery business in Italy.

Songwon announced on 7 December that prices for all its products will be raised by 2-5 %, depending on business line and region. The company said that these price increases are a consequence of the sudden escalation of freight rates that took place on most routes. The new prices are effective as of 1 January 2021, or as contracts allow.

Perstorp announced that it has developed a production concept to produce methanol from a large variety of recovered end-of-life streams and hydrogen from electrolysis. Project AIR will build a first-of-a-kind, large scale, commercial Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) unit to produce sustainable methanol. The methanol plant will be unique in the sense that it is a combined CCU and gasification process where CO2, residue streams, renewable hydrogen and biomethane will be converted to methanol. Perstorp plans to do this in cooperation with Fortum, Uniper and Nature Energy.
