In line with the vision that post-consumer plastic waste is too valuable for single use, OMV and Borealis are exploring the potential for synergies in the OMV ReOil innovation project: Borealis is a major polyolefin producer and has acquired two recycling companies as part of its focus on developing a roadmap for the circular economy. OMV has been exploring the potential of post-consumer plastics since 2011 and is now working on scaling up the ReOil process.

Extrusion specialist Davis-Standard has added a 3,251 m² facility near the existing shop in Suzhou, China, which will house control panel assembly and provide additional warehousing. The company said that the additional space will allow to build more extrusion coating lines at its main plant while supporting other machine services, including faster delivery.

The company said that it is an exceptional achievement to meet the Asian country’s stringent local regulations and standards.

Lanxess has entered into close collaboration with Citrine Informatics, a US-based Artificial Intelligence (AI) expert specialising in data-driven materials development. The companies have launched a pilot project aimed at gauging the potential of Artificial Intelligence for the plastics production. The aim is to further optimise the glass fibres that Lanxess uses for reinforcing many of its plastic compounds.

At the international trade fair for technical textiles and nonwovens Techtextil (14–17 May 2019, Frankfurt, Germany) BASF will highlight its expertise in fabrics, films, nonwovens, yarns and hot-melt adhesives based on Elastollan thermoplastic polyurethane. Due to its high elasticity and mechanical strength, the plastic is suitable for the production of a wide range of materials for the textile industry.

Borealis has announced that its new compounding plant in Taylorsville, NC, USA, has come on stream during Q1 2019 as planned, with the inauguration of the facility scheduled for May 2019. The plant has dedicated production lines for thermoplastic olefin (TPO) and short glass fibre (SGF) reinforced compounds and adds another 30 kt to the company’s global PP compounding capacity.

In 2019, the Brandstätter Group will further expand its involvement in the American market. Despite the turbulence surrounding the insolvency of Toys "R "Us, sales of Playmobil increased by 20 % in the US. The group said that through trade partnerships with big retailers Walmart and Target, it has completed a strategy change from niche products to mass market. The company has concrete plans for building a proprietary production site in the US and said that search analyses for a location are already underway. The aim is to simplify logistical processes and to be even closer to the US market. In addition, the group sees a great market potential for Playmobil in South America and Asia.

Bö-La and TactoTek have signed an agreement for Bö-La to market and sell injection molded structural electronics (IMSE) solutions. Bö-La has specific expertise in delivering high quality cosmetic surfaces, technical screen printing, illumination and film-insert-molding (FIM) / in-mould labeling (IML). TactoTek said that the vast majority of its IMSE customer cases are for user interfaces that require flawless cosmetics and that Bö-La’s film-insert moulding skill is recognised by leaders in automotive, appliance and electronics markets as consistently meeting the highest standards.
