Arburg has announced to attend the PIAE Europe congress in Mannheim, Germany, from 8 to 9 September 2021 as exhibitor, and will in addition also give an expert presentation. The renowned international congress for plastics in the automotive industry, held by the Association of German Engineers (VDI), will be held as a hybrid event this year. In the “Sustainable use of plastics” section of the programme, Dr. Thomas Walther, head of Application & Process Development at Arburg, will talk about the R-Cycle project, for which Arburg is the only mechanical engineering partner (9 September, 12:30pm). Trendsetting automotive components will be showcased in the foyer, at stand 119.

Smithers is currently recruiting for professionals at the forefront of the elastomers industry to present at the renowned Silicone Elastomers and Thermoplastic Elastomers World Summit this November/December in Europe. (Exact date and location to be confirmed). The deadline for the submission of papers has been extended. So there is still time to submit an abstract.

The Institute for Plastics Processing (Institut für Kunststoffverarbeitung – IKV) invites to the 2nd International Symposium on Plastics Technology on 14 and 15 March 2022 in Aachen, Germany. In 2020, the scientific committee of the Symposium received contributions from 14 nations, which dealt with innovative topics in plastics technology and ensured a wide-ranging programme. Now the Call for Papers is open again and contributions are being sought for next year's Symposium.

Olin Corporation announced that it has entered into an agreement with Ashta Chemicals, Inc. to purchase and sell the chlorine produced at Ashta's headquarters and production facilities in Ashtabula, OH, USA. Olin said existing contracts will be honoured for chlorine customers of both companies. Olin is a global manufacturer and distributor of chemical products and a leading U.S. manufacturer of ammunition.

Cargill and Helm announced that they are entering into a joint venture, Qore, to help leading brands replace fossil-based chemistries with bio-based intermediates. As part of the agreement, both companies are investing a combined USD 300 million to build the first commercial-scale, renewable 1,4-butanediol (BDO) facility in the USA.

Clariant and India Glycols Limited (IGL), a producer of green technology-based chemicals, announced the successful creation of their 51 % – 49 % joint venture for renewable ethylene oxide (EO) derivatives after receiving all necessary regulatory approvals. The joint venture will operate under the name Clariant IGL Specialty Chemicals Private Limited.

On 30 June 2021, Celanese Corporation announced the signing of a definitive agreement to acquire the Santoprene TPV elastomers business of Exxon Mobil Corporation. The business is a leading global producer of TPV serving a variety of end-uses including automotive, construction, appliance, medical, and industrial. Celanese will buy the Santoprene brand as part of a comprehensive TPV product portfolio, along with intellectual property, production and commercial assets, and a world-class organisation.

In January 2021, Melitek broke ground starting first stage of new expansion. Now the company announced that it has completed the project of two additional warehouses at its plant in Nr. Alslev. The two high-storage-warehouses are of 1000 m2 each and enable melitek to storage additional 1,800 t of meliflex compounds and raw materials on-site.

In light of increased efforts towards climate neutrality by 2050, the European Union (EU) is working on the implementation of a so-called carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM), which would put a carbon price on imports of certain goods from outside the EU. In the recent publication, nova-Paper #15 „A Tax on Fossil Carbon is More Effective Than a Tax on CO2 Emissions“, the nova-Institute introduces and discusses the realisation of the CBAM as a tax on fossil carbon. The proposed fossil carbon tax is a simple, effective and elegant tool to achieve the goals of the carbon border adjustment mechanism. It is in line with the ambitious climate goals of the EU and supports both the decarbonisation of the energy sector as well as the transformation of the chemicals and derived materials sector from fossil to renewable carbon, said nova-Institute.

On 22 June 2021, Engel gave an optimistic outlook for the current fiscal year. "Our order books are as full as they last were in 2018", said CEO Dr. Stefan Engleder. "We have genuinely sky-rocketed out of the crisis." At the same time, new challenges await the injection moulding machine manufacturer and system solution provider from Austria, above all the current supply bottlenecks in raw materials and components. "We have evolved during the crisis," said Engleder. "We will master the challenges that lie ahead well."
