I admit that in retrospect, 2019 will certainly not be one of my favorite years in many respects, but uncertain and challenging times always bring something good with them, if you continue to move forward with confidence and courage, act counter-cyclically!
And so, in a time of economic uncertainty and the associated cutbacks in advertising budgets, trade conflicts, “plastic bashing”, and the demise of publishing houses, we have dared to launch a new magazine at K 2019:
The focus of RE3 is on Circular Economy. The three keywords “REduce”, “REuse”, “REcycle” appear again and again. In RE3 you can read what they stand for, and which interesting approaches and solutions are available. The magazine is published four times a year in German and English in PRINT and online. Visit www.re3.today and follow us also on Twitter and LinkedIn. Issue 01 will be published at the end of March.
The content of the magazine’s coverage focuses on solutions the industry is developing – new products, technical developments and information about companies that provide systemic solutions. In addition, it includes definitions of terms, scientific research results, pro-con comparisons, business news and articles about people in the industry and associations.
A critical view of the ongoing discussion is also necessary within the industry. Our focus is on a future-oriented and responsible handling of the valuable material plastics. “Green Washing” is out of place in RE3.
Although RE3 is not a technical magazine, it is managed in terms of content and sales by the expert staff of Dr. Gupta Verlags GmbH, who are also your contacts for all questions. RE3 is published by INDIGU Publishing.
With a new publisher, we have the opportunity to contribute with expertise and knowledge to the social discussion about the pros and cons of the various plastics in our everyday lives – extending the scope beyond the plastics industry.

During the CPI Polyurethanes Technical Conference 2019 in Orlando, FL, USA, we had the opportunity to talk to leading industry experts about current developments in the North American PU market. The following report summarizes the various statements made by experts from Covestro, BASF, Evonik, Huntsman and The Dow Chemical Company.
Foam Expo North America 2020, one of the world’s largest dedicated exhibitions and conferences for the technical foam industry, will take place from 24 – 26 March 2020 in halls A, B and C of the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, MI, USA. According to the organiser, Smarter Shows (Tarsus) Ltd., the event is a meeting place for the manufacturers, suppliers and buyers of technical foam products and technologies, offering attendees access to innovative machinery and services from across the entire foam supply chain. Moving into its fourth year, the event provides a unique opportunity to network with OEMs and suppliers and keep up-to-date with the latest industry trends.
The automotive industry is under economic and transformation pressure worldwide. On the one hand, the transition to electric mobility must be shouldered. On the other hand, the poor state of the industry as a result of the US customs wars under President Donald Trump is causing concern. Switching to electro mobility will result in the loss of jobs in the industry, which cannot be compensated for by the growth processes in the coming years. Important value creation in the internal combustion engine sector will be lost bit by bit and replaced by highly automated battery and electric motor production.
The Center of Automotive Management (CAM) at University of Applied Sciences of Economy (FHDW) in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, regularly examines the innovations of automotive manufacturers in the field of electromobility, as well as sales developments and trends in important automotive key markets. Since 2005, vehicle technology innovations of currently more than 40 automotive manufacturers have been surveyed each quarter according to approximately 50 defined criteria such as field of technology, innovation type, originality, maturity level, etc. and individually evaluated using the MOBIL (Maturity, Originality, Benefit, Innovation Level) approach. The complete study AutomotiveInnovations 2019 identifies the future trends of automotive manufacturers from countries such as Europe, Japan, the USA, and China. The Electromobility Report regularly analyses the electromobility market and the sales developments of the automotive manufacturers. The focus is on the core markets of China, the USA and the European Union. The following report presents some key statements of CAM’s current reports “AutomotiveInnovations 2019” and “Electromobility Report 2020”.
On 8 January 2020, the Italian plastics and rubber processing machinery and moulds manufacturers association Amaplast announced that it expects a negative year-end result for the Italian plastics and rubber processing machinery industry, citing foreign trade data published by the Italian National Statistical Institute (ISTAT) for January – September 2019. The statistics show a continuing slump in the two trade flows, down –13.1 % for imports (overall value of EUR 645 million) and –8.5 % for exports (just below EUR 2.16 billion) with respect to the first nine months of 2018.
Ube Industries, Ltd. has developed the Eternathane prepolymers series, a platform of isocyanate-terminated urethane prepolymers with customisable polycarbonate diol and isocyanate composition. The products can be used for polyurethane applications requesting high performance and maximised durability in harsh conditions overtime. According to the manufacturer, the prepolymers series can be supplied in a wide range of free NCO content, offering a working pot life useful for both machine and hand-batching procedures. Eternathane-based polyurethanes properties can be adjusted by using a standard or a mixture of different curative agents, such as Ube’s Eternacoll polycarbonate diol.
IAL Consultants has published the twelfth edition of its study on the market for thermal insulation in Europe. This study updates the previous report published in 2017 and contains market data for all the main thermal insulation products, by material type and end-use application, for the base year of 2018. Data is presented in both volume (cubic metres and tonnes) and value (Euro), with five-year forecasts to 2023. The materials covered include: glass wool, stone wool, white EPS, grey EPS, XPS, PU, PIR, phenolics, ENR, PE, renewable insulation materials, and vacuum insulation panels/aerogel. The analysis covers 26 countries (including all major European thermal insulation markets) split into 14 country volumes, covering the insulation materials mentioned above. In addition, separate material volumes are provided for the four key insulation materials: mineral fibre, EPS (white and grey), XPS and PU/PIR.
Polyhydroxy urethanes possess the potential to complement the portfolio of PU coatings and related applications. We describe a promising procedure to obtain waterborne isocyanate-free urethane comprising polymers and their use for coating applications. The synthesis of the polyhydroxy urethanes in solvents bases on a charge stabilization procedure leading to stable water based polyhydroxy urethane dispersions with up to around 40 wt% solid content. Raw material properties, film formation, and coating properties of around 0.1 mm thickness were also explored. First results focus on coatings for wood applications. Interestingly, the hydroxyl offers several possibilities to modify this raw material expanding the availability of this interesting material in coating sciences.
A series of polyurethane (PU) reactive hot melt adhesives (RHMAs) were prepared from 4,4’-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (4,4’-MDI) reacted with poly(1,3-propylene alkanedicarboxylate) diols of different chain lengths, and combined with 100 % renewably-sourced polytrimethylene ether glycol (PO3G) or poly(oxypropylene) glycol (PPG). The morphology and adhesion properties of these PURHMAs were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMA) and tensile testing. PURHMAs prepared with the two different polyether diols, PO3G and PPG, generate significantly different values for glass transition temperature, crystallinity properties, open time, and bulk tensile strength. The resultant PURHMAs prepared from poly(1,3-propylene alkanedicarboxylate) and sustainably-derived PO3G exhibit excellent adhesion properties to multiple substrates including plastics (PC, ABS) and metals (aluminum, steel), which is comparable to or better than those prepared from poly(1,6-hexamethylene adipate) diol (PHA) or PPG.
Polyurethanes (PU) represent one of the most versatile classes of plastics. They are processed and used as thermoplastic, elastomer, and thermoset. The requirements regarding flammability are correspondingly versatile. Depending on the material and the field of application, specific fire tests have to be fulfilled. This paper describes the different concepts used to fulfil these requirements by choosing the right raw materials and flame retardants.
Polyurethanes have been long known for excellent abrasion resistance, especially when compared with other materials such as rubber, plastic, and metal. However, the abrasion resistance can be further improved by the addition of additives. In this paper, the effect of various additives on the abrasion resistance (ASTM D5963-Rotary Drum Abrasion) of various polyurethane systems will be presented. Multiple isocyanates, polyol backbones, curatives, stoichiometric ratios, and multiple additives will be evaluated in an effort to identify the most effective routes to improving abrasion resistance without compromising the physical/mechanical properties. The methods of incorporating various additives will be discussed as well.
